Antas Cemetery 1912

In the XVII and XVIII centuries, in Antas, as in many other places of the country, the burials were carried out inside and in the patio of the parish church, located inside the urban nucleus. The lack of hygiene and sanitation of these burials caused the appearance of diseases that spread rapidly among the population. The enclosure of the courtyard of the church of Antas had an area of just over two hundred square meters.

The large number of epidemics that occurred throughout the 18th century prompted Charles III to commission the Council, by Royal Order, to search for methods to solve the serious risk to public health, in line with the enlightened ideas on health prevention and hygiene promotion that were being developed in Germany, England and France, where civil cemeteries had already been built.

The Royal Decree of Charles III, dated April 3, 1787, is the document that changed the place of burial of the deceased, although its drafting provoked a controversy in the Church, which considered that it meant an unacceptable interference of the State in its prerogatives in the funerary field, with the consequent economic damage it would suffer due to the loss of the concessions of burial rights.

Based on the provisions of this Royal Decree, a cemetery was built on the outskirts of the urban center, on the right bank of the Aljáriz or Mendras road, more than two hundred meters from the houses existing at that time. The enclosure had an area of one thousand one hundred and forty square meters.

The file for the construction of the current municipal cemetery of the municipality of Antas was initiated from a communication from the town council to the Civil Government, dated May 24, 1900, which showed the state in which the existing cemetery was at that date.

The Civil Governor, on June 24, 1900, ordered that the appropriate proceedings be opened for the construction of a new cemetery, in accordance with the Royal Order of July 16, 1888.

In this file, there is a certificate issued by the municipal secretary, Mr. Cristóbal Guerrero Simón, on the deaths that occurred in the municipality during the last decade, in which it is reported that the adults, or over seven years of age, who died in that period were 332, and the infants, or under seven years of age, were 475, which meant an average of 79 deaths per year.

The Cemetery Project for the town of Antas was drafted by the architect of the Provincial Council, Mr. Enrique López Rull, who signed it in September 1904.

Cemetery project plan for Antas by architect Enrique López Rull. 1904

In the Descriptive Memory of the same, it is justified that the lack of capacity, the short distance to the urban center and the hygienic conditions of the existing cemetery motivated the agreement of the city council to build another one that met all the conditions that the current legislation stipulated for these buildings.

The place chosen for its location was the place called ¨Los Casqueles”, whose calcareous soil met the best conditions for burials because it favored the organic decomposition of the corpses that were deposited in it.

Likewise, the distance of more than 500 meters from the urban center of the town and its location, with respect to it, did not favor the prevailing winds passing through the cemetery rather than through the town, were circumstances that made it suitable for such use.

In addition, the site chosen was not near any watercourse, neither alveous nor subalveous, which could be contaminated by any infection, a circumstance that the legislation in force at that time was insistently fixed. It met, therefore, all the conditions required.

The land chosen for the construction of the municipal cemetery, with an area of three thousand four hundred square meters, was acquired by the city council from Luis Belmonte Rodríguez for four hundred pesetas.

The capacity of the building had to be deduced from the mortality rate for the last five years, which had been 399 individuals, representing 2.70 percent per year of the number of inhabitants, which at that time was 2,916.

And, supposing that the exhumations were made eight years at a time, a figure that exceeds by three the five years advised by science for total decomposition, and that each one occupied an area of four square meters, two thousand five hundred and sixty square meters (2,560 m2) were necessary for the 640 who, probably, would die in the following eight years.

To this, one hundred and fifty square meters (150 m2) had to be added for the chapel, depository, entrance and room for the gravedigger; one hundred square meters for isolated burials, niches and others; and two hundred square meters (200 m2) for cases of increased mortality due to epidemics.

Therefore, it was considered that three thousand square meters was sufficient for the purpose of the project, since, it was assured, the population would not increase.

A rectangular enclosure of sixty-two meters in length and fifty-two meters in latitude was projected, including the thickness of the fence walls, buttresses and other inherent works.

The usual layout was followed based on the program required by the municipal corporation: a covered entrance, where the corpses could be laid out, a chapel and mortuary connected by a glass window, so that funeral masses could be said; and on the right side, at the entrance, the gravedigger’s dwelling.

At the rear, and attached to the north wall of the fence wall, there was an enclosure for non-Catholics of eight by eight meters (64 m2) capable of burying 32 corpses, “more than enough for the locality and its beliefs”, unlike Garrucha.

The enclosure was designed with a fence of masonry walls, 2.80 meters high, slightly higher than the 2.50 meters proposed by the corporation, to prevent any vermin from penetrating and causing desecration. To give stability to the wall, buttresses were placed every six meters.

The upper part of the wall was crowned with a course of brick and, on top of it, a coping of common mortar to protect it from atmospheric agents.

The outbuildings were covered with iron beams and flat brick framing covered with another tile laid with semi-hydraulic mortar.

The foundation was designed with a width of sixty centimeters and a depth of eighty centimeters, both in the enclosure and in the outbuildings.

The morgue room, or autopsy room, had a masonry table covered with a marble table top.

According to the architect’s report, the limited budget did not allow for the construction of pits separated by brick walls, two meters deep, which allowed for the burial of two superimposed corpses separated by a layer of lime.

The budget for the works reflected in the project amounted to five thousand three hundred and eight pesetas and twenty-eight cents (5,308.28 pesetas), although the final cost almost doubled.

The Permanent Commission of the Provincial Board of Health, in session celebrated on November 29, 1905, agreed to authorize the construction of a Catholic and Civil Cemetery, in the town of Antas, for being all adjusted to the sanitary laws in force in the matter.

On June 9, 1906, being mayor of Antas Ignacio Martínez Cano, the Civil Governor authorized, after the inspection carried out, the continuation of the works of the chapel that was being built in the old cemetery. Three days later, Juan Rodríguez López, in charge of the works, was informed to continue with the construction of the chapel.

On January 1, 1907, Juan Rodríguez López presided over the municipal corporation of Antas, beginning a period of five years at the head of the city council, coinciding, in good part, with the long government of Antonio Maura at the head of the government of Spain.

The specifications for the auction and contracting of the construction of the cemetery, with the note of approval, was sent by the Civil Government to the town council of Antas on March 22, 1911, when Gabriel Guerrero Simón was mayor, with José Canalejas presiding over the Spanish government.

On May 25, 1911, the secretary of the town council of Antas certified that no proposals had been presented for the construction of the cemetery.

After a second auction, in which no bids were submitted either, on July 3, 1911, the corporation requested the Civil Government to authorize the municipality to execute the works by administration, under the same type and conditions that had served as the basis for the auctions.

On August 15, 1911, the corporation was informed of an official letter from the Civil Governor, dated July 31, 1911, authorizing the town council to carry out the cemetery works by administration. And the mayor was authorized to carry out any necessary management to start the works as soon as possible.

The total expenses for the construction of the cemetery amounted to 10,041.45 pesetas, of which 6,411.00 were for labor; 2,458.25 for materials; and 1,172.20 for the trades of marble worker, blacksmith and carpenter.

To improve the access to the cemetery, from the river, the city council had to acquire other land for an amount of two hundred pesetas. The conditioning of the road cost seven hundred and fifty pesetas, and was completed in two months.

On September 8, 1912, the corporation agreed to delay the act of blessing of the cemetery, which was scheduled for that day, to make some pending finishing touches. It was also agreed to name the building “Cemetery of Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza”.

It was also agreed in that session that “once the works were finished, and since there was no architect or other similar expert in the town, that the corresponding certificate on the state of the works be issued by the facultative director appointed for that purpose, Mr. Ignacio Casquet Cano, mine foreman, and the master builders who executed them, Mr. Lorenzo Marín Giménez and Mr. Ginés López Collado, and that, once these requirements were fulfilled, the appropriate regulations for the administration, care and conservation of the cemetery be drawn up”.

On September 12, 1912, the corporation, presided by Gabriel Guerrero Simón, met to witness the act of the solemn blessing that had just been performed by the parish priest Domingo Sebastián Caparros.

On September 28, 1912, Mr. Ignacio Casquet Cano, Mr. Lorenzo Marín Giménez and Mr. Ginés López Collado certified that “the works have been executed with the degree of solidity and good construction required in the plan opportunely approved by the superiority, being, therefore, in good condition and being able to proceed definitively to its reception”. The first two signed because the last one did not know how to do it.

On October 18, 1912 the first burial in the cemetery of Antas was recorded. María Guerrero Castaño, single, 19 years old, who died of influenza fever.

The first burials were made in pits dug in the ground, some of which have survived to the present day, being later, in many cases, transferred to the niches once they were built.

The usual size of the first pantheons was four meters in front by three meters deep. They had three levels, a vestibule and an ossuary underneath it. The price was set at one hundred and fifty pesetas, from the first ones built, until 1939.

On February 23, 1913, authorization was granted to Gines Clemente Ridao for the construction of first class niches. On March 9, of that same year, the construction of twenty-seven niches began, in the back front of the enclosure, by the master mason Lorenzo Marín Giménez, at the rate of twenty-five pesetas for each one.

On June 27, 1915, tree planting began to improve the appearance of the interior of the cemetery. They had to be replaced in February of the following year, since the first ones had not taken hold.

The oldest pantheon that remains today belonged to Roque Giménez Fernández, who, on December 26, 1915, requested the concession in perpetuity of a plot of land 4 meters deep by 3.50 meters in front, in the center of the left side wall, to build a family pantheon. The price was 175 pesetas, and the title of ownership, in all cases, was the plenary agreement together with the letter of payment.

After having exhausted the niches for rent as a result of the increase in deaths caused by the “Spanish flu”, on February 25, 1917, the city council commissioned the master mason Ginés López Collado to build twenty-one new niches, on the left front of the cemetery, for 500 pesetas.

On March 19, 1939, in the last days of the Civil War, due to the economic situation of most of the neighbors and the scarcity of wood, the mayor, Antonio Ridao Ortega, commissioned the carpenter Guillermo Cano Cano, with an amount of two hundred pesetas, the construction of a coffin that could be used more than once. Subsequently, it was known as “the coffin of the animas”.

In the processes of cemetery clogging and expansion of the Antas cemetery we can distinguish four phases:

From its inauguration until 1950, pantheons were built attached to the west, east and north sides of the perimeter wall until they were filled, which allowed the burials to remain there without the need to exhume the corpses after eight years, as originally planned. During this period, masonry walls and lime mortar plastering continued to be used in the construction of the vaults.

Beginning in 1950, the construction of cemeteries began in the center of the precinct, forming the central street from the entrance to the north side. In this period, which lasted until the eighties, the use of cement mortar began in the construction of walls and the finishing of facades.

The saturation of the first enclosure, led the city council in the early eighties, to propose its extension to the west with an area of one thousand three hundred square meters, articulating the connection by extending the central street in an east-west direction. In the second enclosure all the pantheons were built with identical size and morphology. The coverings, for the most part, were made of gray and black granite.

The rapid filling of the second enclosure, and the vacant land in the first, led the city council, in the first decade of this century, to the acquisition of a property adjacent to the cemetery. Part of it was ceded to the company that owns the morgue, and the rest was used for the extension to the north with an area of 4,200 square meters, with a lower density, with streets running north-south, and a new transparent metal mesh enclosure that allows for wide perspectives from the inside.

The cemetery of Antas has been characterized from the beginning by the use of simple materials and construction systems, masonry and lime plaster, without the use, at any time, of exposed stone in walls or in the formation of holes.

In the first enclosure some pantheons stand out with cement mortar and gravel of uniform granulometry, given with trowel and, later, chopped with bujarda hammer, imitating stone masonry, built in the decade of the fifties. And the pantheon of the widow of Simón Cano Cano, of neo-Gothic style, with white marble cladding.

In the second and third enclosures, the uniformity in the size of the pantheons and in the materials used to cover the fronts is noteworthy.
